What to Know Before Renting a Motorcycle in Sri Lanka
Licences, permits and the three ways to get road-legal as a visitor.
Before you ride in Sri Lanka, you need to be road-legal. There are three routes, depending on how much of the process you want to handle yourself.
1. Arrange your permit online before arrival
The simplest option is to have your driving permit arranged before you land, so you can start riding immediately on arrival. We handle the paperwork for our renters — the process is straightforward and it's the choice most visitors make.
2. Visit the Department of Motor Traffic in person
If you prefer to handle things yourself, you can obtain a temporary Sri Lankan driving permit at the DMT in Werahera, about 30 minutes from Colombo. The process typically takes between 30 minutes and a few hours depending on the day. Check the local holiday schedule to avoid delays.
3. Endorse your International Driving Permit
If you already hold an International Driving Permit, you can have it endorsed by the Automobile Association of Ceylon over the counter at their Colombo office. It's a straightforward process, but arriving early is recommended to avoid long waits.
Each option offers flexibility depending on your schedule. For the most seamless experience, arranging your permit before you travel is highly recommended.
